Ivan Pavlov and John Watson both became well known for their use of classical conditioning which is a phenomenon in which organisms respond to a stimulus that will trigger another type of stimulus. Which in this case Ivan used a bell to trigger another stimulus to happen and John used a loud bang to trigger another stimulus. In Ivan’s experiment he wanted to figure out the secrets of the digestive system. So he knew that when a dog encounters food saliva would start to come out from its saliva gland. So he had surgery made on a dog which would collect all the saliva into a measuring tube to measure how much saliva comes out when he was presented with food. So then Ivan first started to ring the bell and measure how much saliva was in the tube. And then every time he rang the bell the dog was given food and his saliva was collected. Finally when the dog would hear a bell he would have almost the same amount of saliva as when he was given the food. But later Ivan discovered that a white coat was what triggered the stimulus to happen because the dog noticed that every time he was given food a person with a white lab coat would give it to him/her.
This was almost the same thing that John did in his experiment with Little Albert. First Little Albert was sat down and was shown many different types of animals like a dog, monkey, and a white mouse and he showed little fear when he was in the presence of them. But then John put a white mouse around him and then he made a loud bang noise that scared little Albert and made him cry and he kept repeating this for about four more times. Then when ever Little Albert was around something that was furry he cried because he remembered that when ever something furry was around him a loud bang would be heard. John proved that fear wasn’t inherited it was learned.
